The Story Foundry is located within Bath Spa University’s TRACE (Research Centre for Transcultural Creativity and Education). We are a storytelling accelerator, helping individuals and organisations to cross boundaries and disciplines in order to tell unique stories and reach diverse audiences. We believe firmly in tech for good, business for good and arts for good.
There are four pillars to our work, and storytelling is at heart of everything we do.
Low Residency PhD
One aspect of The Story Foundry’s offerings is our innovative liberal arts PhD programme. This is a PhD for contemporary writers, storytellers and makers whose project proposals do not fit neatly into traditional academic boxes. Our alumni include published novelists, Hollywood scriptwriters, film festival directors, spoken word artists, and broadcasters. We support projects that have the potential to inspire, impact, and transform society.

The Writers’ Gym and Salon
We also run a Writers’ Gym and Salon for PhD students and early careers researchers who are looking for extra support or accountability for their projects. This is a year round membership plan to help academics move forward with writing focused projects which may range from traditional academic publications, through to funding bids, career progression application, CVs, and public profiles. The Salon consists of monthly, day-long, virtual writing retreats, where members can connect with other academics and set goals for the coming months. This is a space to workshop ideas, get peer feedback, and attend optional seminars on specific topics throughout the year.

We offer a range of services, from the development of strategic foundational frameworks, to the production of engagement campaigns and multimedia project evaluations. We combine professionalism and expertise in storytelling with a community ethos. The projects we support use stories to bring people together across boundaries, and often involve multiple disciplines and skill sets.

Fourthly, the Story Foundry carries out its own in-house research, exploring the evolution and future of storytelling, and gaining insight into methodologies for lifelong learning, research and narrative driven intelligence. We take a public service approach to research and prioritise projects that support diversity, wellbeing and green futures.
